Multipath I/O

MultipathI/O(MPIO),whichisincludedaspartofRedHat

EnterpriseLinux,providesenhancedavailabilityandperformanceforstoragesystems.

WithMPIO,multiplephysicalSANconnectionsarecreatedbetweentheservernodeand

thestoragearray.Congurationstypicallyincluderedundantcablesandswitches,while

thestoragearraysusuallyhavetwocontrollers.Ifanyelement(cable,switch,controller)

fails,theMPIOsoftwarewillautomaticallyswitchtousingtheotherpath.

MPIOisconguredinoneoftwoprincipalways,dependentuponthestoragearray.Inan

active/passivecongurationonlyonepathisusedatanytimeforI/O.Whenafailureis

detected,theI/Oisre-routedoverthealternatepath.InActive/Activemodeallpaths

(therecanbemorethantwo)areusedfortheI/O.I/Oisspreadovertheconnectionsina

round-robinfashion,increasingthetotalI/Operformance.MPIOwasrstintroducedasa

standardfeatureofRedHatEnterpriseLinux4;inversion5,MPIOisenhancedtoprovide

supportfortherootdeviceandcanalsobeconguredaspartofthesysteminstallation

process(usingAnaconda).
