YoucanstarttheGuestCustomizationwizardindirectlyfrom:
TheDeployTemplatewizard
TheCloneVirtualMachinewizard
TheCustomizationSpecificationManager
byselectingavirtualmachine,thenselectingEdit>CustomizationSpecifications,andthenclickingNew.
1StarttheGuestCustomizationwizardusingamethoddescribedabove.
2IfyouopenedtheGuestCustomizationWizardfromtheCustomizationSpecificationManager,select
LinuxastheTargetVirtualMachineOSandgive
itaNameand(optional)Description.ClickNext.
3OntheComputerNamepage,specifytheComputerNameandtheDomainNameforthevirtual
machine.ClickNext.
Thecomputernameisthenamegiventotheparticularinstanceofaguestoperatingsystem.The
operatingsystemusesthisnameto
identifyitselfonthenetwork.OnLinuxsystems,itiscalledthehost
name.ThisisnotthesameastheVMwareInfrastructure3virtualmachinenamethatwasdeclaredearlier
intheDeployTemplatewizardorCloneVirtualMachinewizard.Youcansetthecomputernameusing
thefollowing
options:
Useaspecificname:Thenamecancontainalphanumericcharactersandtheunderscore(_)and
hyphen(-)characters.Itcannotcontainperiods(.)orblankspacesandcannotbemadeupofdigits
only.Ifyouwanttoensurethatthenameisuniquesothatyoudo
notincurconflicts,selectAppend
anumericvaluetoensureuniqueness.Namesarecase‐insensitive:thenamemy_vmisidenticalto
My_Vm.
Usethevirtualmachinename:ThecomputernamethatVirtualCentercreatesisidenticaltothe
nameofthevirtualmachineonwhichtheguestoperatingsystemisrunning.
PrompttheuserforanameintheDeployWizard:VIClientpopulatestheDeployVirtualMachine
wizardwithapromptforthecomputernameafteryoucompleteallthestepsinthewizard.
UseacustomapplicationconfiguredwiththeVirtualCenterServertogenerateaname:Entera
parameterthatcanbepassedtothecustomapplication.
4IfyouwantVirtualCentertoconfigureallnetworkinterfacesautomaticallyfromaDHCPserver,select
TypicalsettingsontheNetworkpage.ClickNext.
IfusingaDHCP
serverisnotappropriateforyourenvironment,selectCustomsettings,andclickNext.
5 Selectthenetworkinterfacecard(NIC)tocustomizeandclickCustomizetomakeadditional
specifications.
UsetheNetworkPropertiesdialogboxtoperformthesesteps:
aOntheGeneraltab,selectwhetheryouwanttouseDHCPtoobtain
anIPaddressautomaticallyor
entertheIPaddressesmanually.AlsoselectwhetheryouwanttouseDHCPtoobtainaDNSserver
addressautomaticallyorentertheDNSserveraddressesmanually.
bClickOKtoreturntothepreviousdialogbox.ClickNextontheNetworkGuestCustomizations
page.

OTESUSELinuxEnterpriseServerdistributionsregistertheEthernetMACaddressinformationintheguest
operatingsystem’sconfigurationfiles.ThiscausestheprocessofobtainingIPaddressesaftercloningtofail.
Toavoidthisissueeditthe/etc/sysconifg/network/configfile,addingthefollowing:
