TheGuestAgentmonitorschangestotheguestoperatingsystem’sRPMpackagedatabase.Wheneverthat
databaseischanged,theGuestAgentreportstheRPMpackagedatabasecontentstoUpdateManagerserver.
Ifthevirtualmachineisonlineatthetimeofthescan,theGuestAgentreportsthecurrentpackageinformation
duringthescan.
Scanning a Linux guest operating system
Duringascanningoperation,UpdateManagercomparesaguestoperatingsystem’spackagedatabase
contentsagainstapredefinedbaselineofpatches.Specifically,theUpdateManagerGuestAgentmonitors
changestotheguestoperatingsystem’sRPMpackagedatabase.Wheneverthatdatabaseischanged,theGuest
AgentreportstheRPMpackagedatabasecontentsto
theUpdateManagerserver.Ifthevirtualmachineis
poweredonatthetimeofthescan,theGuestAgentimmediatelyreportsthecurrentpackageinformation
duringthescan.ThescanresultindicateswhethertheLinuxguestoperatingsystemiscompliantor
noncomplianttothebaseline.Fornoncompliantoperatingsystems,
thescanindicatesthespecificpatchesthat
aremissing.YoucanremediatethesemissingpatchesintheLinuxguestoperatingsystembyinvokingeither
thesoftwareupdaterutilityortheup2dateutilityfoundinmostLinuxdistributions.Theseutilitiesenableyou
todownloadandinstallspecificpatchpackages.

TheNotescolumnindicateswhetherthatguestoperatingsystemisrecommendedor
ifyoushouldavoidusingitfortimesensitivevirtualmachines.Inallothercases,theguestoperatingsystem
hasacceptabletimekeepingperformance.
WhenbothSMPandUPkernelsareavailable,theymustbeusedinvirtualmachinesconfigured
withthe
correspondingvirtualhardware—multipleprocessorsforanSMPkernelorasingleprocessorforaUP
kernel—otherwisethemismatchmaycausetimetodrift.
Editing Kernel Configuration
Kernelcommandlineparametersarespecifiedinthe/etc/lilo.confor/boot/grub/grub.conffile,
dependingonyourchoiceofbootloader.
ForLILO,putthekernelcommandlineparametersattheendoftheappendline.Forexample,iftheappend
linelookslike:
append="resume=/dev/hda6 splash=silent"
andyouwanttoaddclock=pmtmr divider=10,theupdatedtextis:
