A64‐bitguestisabetterchoicefornewerIntelplatformsandforguestoperatingsystemsthataccessalarge
amountofmemory(morethan4GB),because64‐bitkernelscanaddresstheentirememoryspacewithout
complexmemorymanagementoverhead.Also,theVTmonitorfor64‐bitguestsworksfasteronnewerIntel
processorsthantheolderPentium4processors.

specialmemorymanagementkernel.

VMwareToolsisasuiteofutilitiesthatenhancestheperformanceofavirtualmachine’sguestoperating
systemandimprovesmanagementofthevirtualmachine.InstallingVMwareToolsintheguestoperating
systemisvital.AlthoughtheguestoperatingsystemcanrunwithoutVMwareTools,youloseimportant
functionalityandconvenience.

ThefollowingareinstalledwithVMwareTools:
TheVMwareToolsservice(vmware-guestdonLinuxguests).Thisservicesynchronizesthetimeinthe
guestoperatingsystemwiththetimeinESX.
AsetofVMwaredevicedrivers,includinganSVGAdisplaydriver,thevmxnetacceleratednetworking
driver(asdescribedin“MajorComponentsInstalledbyVMwareTools”onpage 8),theBusLogicSCSI
driver(asdescribedin“InstallingLinuxinaVirtualMachine”onpage 2),thememorycontroldriverfor
efficientmemoryallocationbetween
virtualmachines,thesyncdrivertoquiesceI/OforVMware
ConsolidatedBackup,andtheVMwaremousedriver.
